I’ve got just one thing to say about what the video is trying to bring across. Journalistic Integrity. Why am I saying this? Simple. If you are someone who regularly visits gaming websites like 1up and Gamespot you would have known this already. I only found out yesterday through Penny-Arcade’s webcomic that Jeff Gerstman, former Editorial Director of Gamespot , had been fired for putting a negative review, for doing his job.
Now, why is it important? Again, Simple. He put up a negative review of Edios’ “Kane and Kynch: Dead Men”, scoring it at only 6.0/10, a fair game by their standards. A few weeks after, he was fired, rumored and later confirmed by various sources, including a disgruntled Jeff, that he had been dismissed from his position and his belongings left outside his locked office door. Reason for his unbridled departure would be that Eidos, unhappy with the low score, threatened CNet; parent company of Gamespot, that they would cancel future advertisement deals in the future amounting in the hundreds of thousands.
So it has come down to this. Game reviewers would have their ricebowls at stake if they put their honest opinion into what they are writing, ironic isn’t? For standing up to the man, you lose a job you have held for over a decade. Unfortunately for CNet, they do not realize that most of the people reading the site are, in fact, hardcore gamers that seek honest opinions from trusted professional critics. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, that trust has been broken. Since when has corporate management affected editorial departments? I know that these sites rely on on-site advertisements to sustain itself, but those ads are targeted towards people who are reading the site in order to gain insight on what they want, if false information is given out. One would immediately develop a sort of, aversion so to speak. It’s kind of like a, you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours kind of thing. It all comes full circle, karma if you will.
He deserved better, and he will. Big corporations will start realizing the importance of integrity over profit, hmm, but that will never happen.
Random Notes:
Climbing 60 stories at a go is no fucking joke. Gonna try doing this every other day, hopefully I’ll be able to train my in-speed more haha
Another example of selling out. Ratchet and Clank falling in the same category as Mario, are you daft? Yeah, a few days back, it was written as “Sponsored by Sony”….. At least learn to cover your tracks…
If you won't let me, fall for you.
